Diet

It's taken me a while to get to this point, but the time has finaly come for me to admit I have a weight problem.

OK, I admit, it's not a big weight problem.  Most overweight people (which in the U.S. is practically everybody) will laugh at my assertion.  But it's not funny to me that none of my pants fit me anymore and that I have to inhale deeply in order to put on my favorite party shirts.

So, even though I never thought it would come to this, I have joined Weight Watchers.  I'm in for three months and will do my best during that time period.

My starting weight (Sunday morning) was 176 lbs.

My first official weigh-in (Monday night) was 179 lbs.

I can only hope that the three pound difference is due to morning-evening variation.

My goal weight is 150-155 lbs.

25-30 pounds may not seem like much to lose, but to me it sometimes feels impossible.

I felt a little discouraged tonight when I took inventory of my dinner salad and realized that the avocado I ate cost me 9.5 Weight Watchers points.  9 1/2 points for a fugging vegetable!?  All diets suck.

I channeled my avocado-induced rage into a very healthy bikeride into work.  In a brisk headwind I managed 11 miles in 49 minutes, earning me 5 Weight Watchers "activity points."

I used my points to buy a Subway Club to bring to work.

My next official weigh-in is next Monday.  Wish me luck!

Comments:
25-30 pounds is how much I lost on WW. And I am much shorter than you. It took me awhile to lose, but I've kept it off for over 2 years.

Congratulations on starting.

And yes, 3 pounds is about right for day-evening variance.

Hey Josh,
Don't feel bad... we all hit it. Just think I hit it and I am like half your age : P

Just kidding... don't think about how much you have to loose. Just concentrate on getting that pound a week and you will be there before you realise it. If you are like me and your weight hangs out on your belly... do 50 crunches a day (the easy kind where your knees and head both come up at the same time)

One other thing that has helped me is this site, http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/www/hackdiet.html
it is very similar to WW but is directed towards slightly nerdy males and involves fun spreadsheets that help you average out the daily weight fluctuations so that you can see your over all progress.

Loosing weight is fun and it is only hard if you try to drop to much to quickly. Light ab work and light dieting and you will be feeling so much better in a lot less time than you think. Your goal may be 30 lbs... but you will feel suppa sweet when that first 10 comes off.

Thanks for the encouragement, everbody!

I'm feeling a bit more confident now that I'm a few days into this.

It helps to have friends who have already succeeded.

Well, you know how big I used to be, and you know what size I am now...If I can do it, I've got no doubts that you can.

Thanks, Shea!

Update: I'm pleased to announce that I am already down to 173lbs!

Thanks again for everyones' encouragement!

Week 2 Update:

Lost four pounds at first weigh in.

I am now down to 22 daily food points, and am also exercising 4-5 times per week.

Starting weight: 176
Current weight: 172
Goal weight: 150

I need to think of a non-food reward to give myself for every ten pounds I lose. Anyone have any ideas for when I hit 166?

Week 4 Update:

As of Monday 11/28

I weigh 168 lbs. (19% body fat)

I have lost eight pounds to date and now workout four times per week.  I expect to lose even more now that I've given up beer.

Week 5 Update:

Starting weight: 176
Current Weight: 163.5 lbs. (18% body fat)
Goal weight: 150

Week 7 Update:

Dropped down to 159 two weeks ago before adding two pounds to finish last week at 161.

This was my first weight gain since starting my diet.
